Day 63: Brand sponsorship for coaches?

I've just had this interesting chat on ‪#‎equestrianhour‬ on Twitter where I asked what people thought of the fact that there wasn't much happening in terms of brands sponsoring freelance coaches/instructors.
I am not necessarily talking about myself as I am just a little fish in a massive pond, however, I know of some wider-reach coaches who don't compete often any more yet see many clients and could potentially be fabulous brand ambassadors.
I should add that I don't mean for coaches to become reps/sales people pushing certain brands onto clients.
Think about it - a little, smaller scale coach like me visits on average four different livery yards a week, two being rather large. They house a couple of hundred or more horses altogether. Most of these horses have owners who either have lessons with me or at least see me passing by.
Now, I don't drive (driving coach is great too - think of racing cars...you can barely see the car for brands' stickers ;) ) so I also travel regularly on trains to London, Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire. Occasionally I also fly abroad to teach. Again - that's some serious amount of people who see my breeches/jacket/backpack/thermos/boots etc etc on a daily basis.
The other day I was waiting for a train at a station (in my jods as usual ;) when someone walked up to me and asked me if I rode (clue in clothing). We got chatting and it turned out she had two horses at advanced level and trained with Carl Hester (what are the chances of that by the way??).
The point is, people who ride notice other people who look remotely horsey whether they want to or not.
If a rider needs something in terms of clothing for themselves or for the horse, in terms of feeding or management - they will ask me for advice first. If I say, this and that is great, they will buy it 9 out of 10 times.
Now, let's not forget that's just a little me running my own little coaching programme. If you multiply this to match a situation of a much more accomplished trainer who perhaps doesn't ride or compete that much any more but teaches many riders (who then go out and about) it seems obvious that she/he would potentially be a fabulous "brand sponsorship material"?
Out and about teaching...pictures by Pure Essence Photography from one of my clinics in Yorkshire

If you are an instructor -  have you ever been approached by a brand who wanted visibility via your coaching presence?
If you are a rider taking lessons, have you ever asked your coach what bit best to use or where they got their boots from or their breeches from?
There isn't a day someone doesn't ask me what best to buy for this or that, where I got this or that from. If I say buy xyz because I think it would suit them great, they buy it.
So, as a coach, what are your experiences? Would sponsorship of things like clothing/boots/venue sponsorship so you could run clinics etc etc helpful for you?
Or perhaps, as a rider, you think it isn't a good idea? Perhaps you look up only to competition riders to see what they wear, what their horses wear, what they feed?
Perhaps you only look up to coaches/riders who actively compete at higher levels?
I am genuinely very curious about it and although of course I would love to be sponsored myself, I am realistic and try to look at the situation with as little bias as possible.
If I had a product for riders or horses, the right coach would be the first person I would approach to see how they could represent me so it makes me wonder why are most brands so focused on such saturated field as rider sponsorship is?
Your thoughts would be much appreciated :)
Until tomorrow!

Selection day

Here is a link to: How I ended up going to this selection day.

After recent dramas with my alarm clock refusing to work I made sure there were two of them on this morning so I didn't oversleep my train time. Got up well on time only to find out (through Journey Planner website which is a life saver of mine) that the tube was experiencing delays (again).
Spent good few minutes soaking my face in ice-cold water to wake up properly, put my riding stuff on, grabbed my bag and off I went to catch a train to Sutton from London Victoria.
Victoria station welcomed me with Katie Price's face cuddled into horse's neck and beaming from massive The Times billboards - she certainly knows how to attract publicity! I really don't think I have ever seen a horse (maybe other than Lloyd's bank's one) on any billboard in London - Katie goes to HOYS and here we go!

Anyway, I digress. I got to one of those Fast Tickets machines only to find out there were about 5 different Sutton stations - great. Phoned the person who was to pick me up and after establishing the correct Sutton off I went.

The selection day took place in a charming place called Orchard Cottage Riding Centre - lovely yard. There were 13 of us short-listed for the Hendelah Waley Equestrian Fund and we met in order to have our riding skills assessed and to be interviewed by a panel of people from the industry.
Riding section took place in a lovely, warm indoor school with BIG mirrors. It was all quite relaxing and I really enjoyed the experience.
Then onto the interviews. I felt mine went well although if I had a second chance I would probably have said more of what I wanted to say.
We all went one by one so it lasted a couple of hours!

Here are a few pictures I took while awaiting decision of the fund.

Rosie - the horse I rode - very sweet mare

Painting in the office showing artist's impression of the stables

Some old photographs on office walls

After a long, long wait we were all told the results. The panel decided to split the fund and chose 5 of us to receive the grants - I was one of the lucky ones!
Lady who ran the day then took some pictures to be sent to Horse & Hound.
The way it works means that none of us got the money in hand, we now have to decide who we would like to train with and the Fund sends the money to our chosen trainer.

I am going to email Kyra Kyrklund to see if she would take me on for a few days of training! If not, I have two more options on my mind.

What a fab day and what a pleasure to meet people who really want to help you! :)

Being a little...

...busy recently hence no updates. I am working on adding some more teaching in over the winter, details soon.
I was also chosen to go to a viewing day to be scrutinised and assessed whether I deserve an equestrian fund...the day is on the 13th October so more details some time then.

Today the autumn 'returned' (after it went away for a while and the weather was just fabulous) - I wore my Toggi overtrousers for the first time since March. Rain, here I come.

Sponsorship - would it be possible...?

Wouldn't it be nice to find someone charitable enough to sponsor my first season with British Eventing?! Oh, yes, it would be fantastic!
I have been toying with the idea for a while now and finally decided to make a few steps towards at least getting some feedback on the matter.
My contact with the subject of sponsorship is limited. About 8 years ago, when I run my own business together with my parents, my company was involved in sponsoring a series of regional show-jumping events. It was very much of our own initiative and came from enjoyment of being involved in the sport so the organisers didn't have to ask us twice.
The Marketing/PR studies I did also brushed on sponsorship but this hasn't changed the fact that I have never actually been on the other side i.e. trying to acquire a sponsorship.

It obviously doesn't help that I am a completely unknown quality in the equestrian world in the UK, I have no name to flash into VIPs faces and no competition record in this country to speak of. I guess I could dig something from PZJ (Polish Equestrian Federation) but even if they did still have anything I could be proud of I doubt those old records would change much. Additionally, it would all be to do with show-jumping only.

So, how do you go about asking a company for a £1.000 to cover the costs of British Eventing for the 2008 season? Here is what I did.
First of all, I checked the Rule Book to see what I can and can't do as far as exposure of logos, names etc is involved. I reckoned that I need to know what I can offer to potential sponsors in the first place.
Thankfully, both BEF (British Equestrian Federation) and British Eventing have a wealth of information accessible online.
Here are some of the materials I went through:

1) Get Sponsored - UK Sport
2) Other Support for Riders - unfortunately I am not eligible for any of the listed options :(
3 Sponsorship section on the British Eventing website - a quide for potential sponsors

Considering I cannot offer any glorious publicity and to avoid looking totally foolish I decided to start with friends who I knew worked for companies that could be potentially able to sponsor me.

The aim for the 2008 is to attend the following events:
  • March 21 - Munstead (already enetered)
  • May 25 - Borde Hill
  • May 31 - Merrist Wood
  • June 14 - BCA (Berkshire College of Agriculture)
  • July 19 - Iping
  • July 26 - Mattingley
  • August 16 - Burnham Beeches
  • August 30 - Firle OR Munstead
  • Oct 4 - Pulborough
All this is just a plan depended on Hamlet's form and of course, on finances. I will probably also do some BD dressage competitions and some BSJA in between the events.
The company name/ logo/website address could be printed on the numnahs, cooler rugs and possibly my XC colours (providing the company colours are not too vile ;) Any other endorsments could also be discussed.
Hamlet's owner, Jenny, suggested I also add that the Eventing is what Zara Phillips does and that this information alone might sway the decision ;)

I don't hold my hopes high but will keep you posted on the matter.

Meanwhile if anybody would like to help, please
click here to contact me via my website as soon as you possibly can :) I really cannot wait to hear from you!
